I could go to the table saw rather than pick up a tenon saw but i am probably quicker with a tenon saw. Unclamp the braces and saw each one to shape. The varnish is plenty tough so using poly just makes the process a little more difficult because you have sand more to ensure the next layer of finish will bond well.
